An Air Operators
Certificate (AOC) is issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
This includes any flight where there is "valuable consideration"
given or promised for the carriage of passengers or cargo on that
flight. A working interpretation of "valuable consideration"
is where the aircraft is flown for hire or reward, for money or
otherwise.
AOCs are issued in respect of operations for aeroplanes, helicopters
and hot air balloons. High standards must be achieved before the
award of an AOC and must be demonstrated to CAA flight operations
inspectors.
Flying for commercial purposes eg commissioned
aerial photography without an A.O.C not only invalidates the aircraft
& your own insurance but renders all concerned to criminal
prosecution & full liability for any damage caused in the
event of an incident eg private Pilots Licence & Club Aircraft
is not allowed.
NB When booking any flight for these purposes always ask to
see the A.O.C. certificate - accept no excuses (it is for your
own safety).
